[Be gentle]

Tomaž Šalamun
translated by Brian Henry

Be gentle, my poem,
be a seed,
be a constituent act.
Calm down, word,
let the dust attenuate.
Restrain
the bed of the blind phantom,
redeem the blood of all
the dead and all survivors,
stop before the slaughter of your
innocent children,
don’t sketch
a line before us.
